The short answer is, the largest caliber handgun that you can shoot accurately and that you enjoy shooting on a regular basis. It should also be a caliber that you can afford to shoot regularly to become proficient. Ammunition can be expensive and hard to find at times. We suggest buying a .22 caliber to practice with before moving to a larger caliber. 22's are cheap to shoot, easy to manage, and ammunition is usually more available than any other caliber of handgun. It's a great caliber to learn the fundamentals.
